"In the last twelve years, I have had the fortune of watching Alvin grow from a teenager into an amazing adult who has found his calling to become a counselor. I’ve always been impressed with Alvin’s care for those other than himself and I appreciate that he has made a commitment to come back to the community that he grew up in to serve youth who’s struggles are similar to his own."

“One of Alvin’s strong suits is his experience working inside and outside the classroom. This advantage gave him the insight on how to create and develop curriculum, syllabi, and build pedagogical strategies within an ethnic studies and social justice framework He was trained in critical pedagogy, learned and applied various pragmatic approaches in culturally relevant and responsive practice, and restorative justice.”

"Aside to teaching in PEP, Alvin has also played a big role in PEP's Malong (wellness) program. He oversaw the student mentorship at his Balboa high school site and now currently oversees the Malong coordinators at 7 PEP school sites. He has coordinated many different workshops for both PEP students and teachers. Some of the student workshops he has lead have focused on topics such as college readiness, career planning, financial aid, study skills, leadership, and identity development. As far as training teachers, Alvin has led workshops on mandated reporting, restorative justice, mindfulness, leadership skills, and how to deal with student trauma."
